That Was The Year That Was

Another year, another decade.

Yesterday and today, the internet is full of lists. Lists which remind of us, if nothing else, what we have missed in the past 365 days. I have reviewed a couple of these lists and have determined I've been living under a rock.

Take the Top Ten songs of 2009 for example, there is not one single artist on the list that I make it a point to listen to. In fact, there were only four artist that I have even heard of. Here's the list according to the AOL Radio Blog.

10. Jason Derulo: Whacha Say
9. Owl City: Fireflies
8. Flo Rida: Right Round
7. Kelly Clarkson: My Life Would Suck Without You
6. Kings of Leon: Use Somebody
5. Black-Eyed Peas: I Gotta Feeling
4. Lady GaGa: Poker Face
3. Iyaz: Replay
2. Jay Sean: Down
1. Taylor Swift: You Belong With Me

With the exception of Taylor Swift, Lady GaGa, Black Eyed Peas and Kelly Clarkson, I ask, who are these people? How can they have a song in the Top Ten? Not only have I never heard their Top Ten hit, I've never heard of them at all. Out of the four I have at least heard of, there are only two where I have actually heard their mega-hit.

The same applies to the Top Ten movies of 2009. I've seen three of the 10.

I guess I'm just not as hip as I once was.

I did happen, however, to post the top video of 2009 here last February. Must be a fluke. The clever stop motion video, Her Morning Elegance, features an animated woman in bed who appears to be flying, falling and swimming. The music is by Oren Lavie, it's a catchy tune.

I found this yesterday, a spoof of this top video. Hey, I know you are busy, you've got places to go and things to do but, this will take less than 2 minutes of your day - less than 2 minutes.

Just push "play".

Happy New Year!!!

  1. Well I'm with you MeMe.

I only know the Whatcha Say song because I remember they used it for an SNL digital skit...last year? I always thought it was a funny ditty.

Except for Kelly Clarkson who I think has an exceptional voice, I could care less about the others.

I miss the days of good ole' rock-n-roll!

  2. @ Quirky - Me too! I loved it when I turned on the radio and could listen to Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin and others and could sing along. Those were the days, my friend.

  3. You're more with the music than I. The only names I know are Clarkson and Swift, and I've never heard a song from either. Give me Steppenwolf, Pink Floyd and Kansas for starters.

  4. Hey it's a whole different generation now. We've passed right on by "contemporary" music. Besides, who can keep up? There's just so much new stuff out there it's simpler to drift back to what we're used to. Your video's a cute take-off of the original. Happy new year Me-Me. All the best in 2010.

  8. Aw hell, I wouldn't know any of those songs if they came up and bashed me in the head. If they're not being played on XM radio Bluesville, Deep Tracks or Underground Garage stations, I don't hear 'em.

    Have a great 2010!

  10. I'm out of touch, too. I listen to 70's and 80's stuff on XM or whatever I have on my ipod which is mostly older stuff. I do like Kelly, though, because she's a local girl and she really can sing. As for her songs, some I like, some not so much.

    Happy New Year!

  14. I may have you beat on the songs, I have heard of a few more of them than you have. On the movies though, you are way ahead of me. Can you believe I did not see one single movie all year long.

  17. Great video... even if I never saw the original it parodies. Because I'm old. And out of touch. And apathetic about the whole music scene these days. (I'm still stuck in the late 60's & early 70's.)

    Happy New Year, Me-Me!

  18. Loved the video...who thinks of this stuff anyway? Yep, I only recognize 4 of those artists but I did see 4 movies this year. Woo Hoo! I haven't been cool or current in years, I'm good with that.
My best wishes to you for a very Happy New Year!
