Wacky Wednesday! - The Comb Over

Last time we talked about "hair don'ts", we featured the Mullet. Today, we are exploring the amazing Comb Over.

A comb over or combover is a hairstyle worn by bald or balding men in which the hair on one side of the head is grown long and then combed over the bald area to minimize the display of baldness.

Okay, we've all seen them. We've gawked, we've snickered and we've even felt sorry for these men. What you may not know about this style for men (and women) in denial is this "hair don't" has actually received a patent.

A variation of the Comb Over (whereby baldness is concealed by long hairs combed in three separate directions) has a U.S. Patent 4,022,227 by Donald J. Smith and his father, Frank J. Smith, of Orlando, Florida, who were awarded an Ig Nobel Prize in Engineering for their effort.

Such is the interest in this hairstyle that a one-hour documentary – Comb Over - the Movie – has been made about it.

  1. I can't believe all the time that went into crafting that combover in the video. Who has that much patience??

  2. Some people consider desperately handing on to the few hairs you have left on the dome to be an art.

  3. I've seen two combovers that were so bad, they deserve their own video. One was a guy who had a few ridiculously long hairs that he twisted and curled onto his head. The second, even worse, was a guy who let the back hair on his head grow reallllly long, and he brought it forward.

  6. hahaha, I don't know which is worse. The combover or the rug that is so obvious that it looks like it might crawl off their head

  7. My dad had a combover, but his was different because he also had to cover a large bump on his noggin, and thought the few hairs left on his head would do the trick.

  8. I wonder if there is such a thing as a combover fetishist?

  9. I continue to hope that some day my hairline will recede far enough that I'll be able to do a proper combover (yeah, I can just comb over the hair that's there, but that's lame--trust me, I know) (and shaving...that'd be cheating)....

  11. When I saw that my reaction was that it wasn't really a comb over. A comb over is when you try to cover up a receding hair line using actual hair that you have grown yourself. (I should know!) What I saw was a guy spraying on hair out of a can. Where can you buy this instant hair?

  12. I'm glad I don't have that to deal with. I'd probably do a double comb over. That's where you cover your eyebrows to make your hair look like it did when you were in high school. Or at least try.

  13. LOL. Very informative. I've bookmarked this page for future reference in case I ever lose my toupee. Fortunately I use a chin strap so thats not likely.

  14. LOL is all I can say! My dad did the combover but after years of my sister and I bugging him, he put on his big boy boxers and got a good haircut. So brave!!!
