Thanksgiving & All That Jazz

Thanksgiving is just 12 days away! I am really looking forward to my son and his family visiting me during that time. It's been a long time since I have hosted a holiday feast in my home and my emotions are running from one end of the spectrum to the other. I am extremely excited to have my family here one minute and the next minute I'm having anxiety over preparing the meal.
One thing is for sure.....music. I love to cook (and clean) to music. My foot starts tappin', my fingers are snappin' and I'm chop, chop, choppin' to the beat. Next thing I know, everything is plated and it's time to sit down and eat.

While looking for some Thanksgiving music suggestions today, I ran across this handy playlist on Pinterest. Not only does it have a section for while in the kitchen, it also has a section for at the table. Cool!

Although this playlist has a wide variety of selections, there are two songs in particular that didn't make the list that are absolute Thanksgiving favorites of mine --Adam Sandler's Thanksgiving Song and Arlo Guthrie's Alice's Restaurant which I have posted below.

What are you favorite music selections for Thanksgiving? I'd love to get your input for my official playlist. In the meantime, I'll just keep calm and sing along!

Love This!!!

I am in love.....in love with Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros. This ensemble hippie band will be featured this year at the Coachella Music Festival in April. Their song, Home, from their self-title album is definitely a favorite of mine.

Give a listen.....

That Was The Year That Was

Another year, another decade.

Yesterday and today, the internet is full of lists. Lists which remind of us, if nothing else, what we have missed in the past 365 days. I have reviewed a couple of these lists and have determined I've been living under a rock.

Take the Top Ten songs of 2009 for example, there is not one single artist on the list that I make it a point to listen to. In fact, there were only four artist that I have even heard of. Here's the list according to the AOL Radio Blog.

10. Jason Derulo: Whacha Say
9. Owl City: Fireflies
8. Flo Rida: Right Round
7. Kelly Clarkson: My Life Would Suck Without You
6. Kings of Leon: Use Somebody
5. Black-Eyed Peas: I Gotta Feeling
4. Lady GaGa: Poker Face
3. Iyaz: Replay
2. Jay Sean: Down
1. Taylor Swift: You Belong With Me

With the exception of Taylor Swift, Lady GaGa, Black Eyed Peas and Kelly Clarkson, I ask, who are these people? How can they have a song in the Top Ten? Not only have I never heard their Top Ten hit, I've never heard of them at all. Out of the four I have at least heard of, there are only two where I have actually heard their mega-hit.

The same applies to the Top Ten movies of 2009. I've seen three of the 10.

I guess I'm just not as hip as I once was.

I did happen, however, to post the top video of 2009 here last February. Must be a fluke. The clever stop motion video, Her Morning Elegance, features an animated woman in bed who appears to be flying, falling and swimming. The music is by Oren Lavie, it's a catchy tune.

I found this yesterday, a spoof of this top video. Hey, I know you are busy, you've got places to go and things to do but, this will take less than 2 minutes of your day - less than 2 minutes.

Just push "play".

Happy New Year!!!

The Fractured ABC's Of Christmas - S

S
is for Sinatra
And other crooners too
Bringing the sounds of the season
With a jazzy beat to you

Although I'm a rocker at heart, there are those singers from my parents' generation that have also played a huge part in my musical influence. Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Tony Bennett are definitely at the top of my list. As you continue you make your rounds today, I thought I'd give you some of the more traditional sounds of the season to fill your day.

Merry Jazzy Christmas!

The Fractured ABC's Of Christmas - F

F is for Funk
Jazz and Rock 'n Roll
Without music
There'd be no Soul

Today's playlist features several artists who have brought to the world such great music over the past decades. There's a blog a friend of mine has dedicated to such artists - dufusdownbeat. If you are a lover of the beats, check out Dufus' blog which primarily covers music of the 60's and 70's. Full of obscure facts and fun videos, I'm sure every music lover will enjoy the selections he features each week.

Continue to listen as you surf today - it's truly good for the soul.

Sentimental Journey

I was reminded today that is has been 40 years since my favorite band released their first album. The Blues Blogger sent me an alert this morning regarding a post he had made. When I clicked over, the past 40 years rushed over me.

Okay, I hear you all saying, "What's that got to do with a humor blog?" Well, nothing. Absolutely nothing. But it does has something to do with me, personally.

I could go on-and-on about how I've listened to The Allman Brothers Band for the past 40 years, how many shows I've attended and how many times I got lost in the guitar licks of Duane Allman. He, alone, is responsible for my air-guitar playing.

Instead, I have a playlist of my Top Five, all from the double-live At Fillmore East album circa 1971. For those of you that weren't around during the early years, all I can say is, you missed out.

This one is for you, Roseann.

Monster Mash!

He did the mash. He did the monster mash! The Monster Mash!

What is Halloween without head bangin', guitar wailin' rock 'n roll music? Right? After last week's Sunday Shuffle, I decided to pull from my playlist this week those songs that are fitting for the season.

Okay, so all of these may not exactly be your cup of witches' brew, but surely there are a couple on the list you will recognize.

1. Bark at the Moon - Ozzy Osbourne
2. Dragula - Rob Zombie
3. Don't Fear the Reaper - Blue Oyster Cult
4. Voodoo - Godsmack
5. Freak on a Leash - Nine Inch Nails
6. Space Lord - Monster Magnet
7. Them Bones - Alice in Chains
8. Iron Man - Black Sabbath
9. Hells Bells - AC/DC
10. Harvester of Sorrow - Metallica

What? You were really expecting The Monster Mash or maybe Witchy Woman? Nope, not here. I went with gut wrenchin' metal today.

For your convenience, I put them all on a playlist for you so you can continue your surfing in another window while listening. Clever, huh?

Now, for your Halloween Top Ten listening pleasure....oh, I suggest you pump up the volume.

Sunday Shuffle

As I was visiting some of the hilarious folks over at Humor Bloggers Dot Com yesterday, I ran across a post that looked like a lot of fun and decided to pass it along. Writes Phillipia had been tagged on FaceBook for the following.....

1. Turn on your MP3 or your playlist on Windows Media Player.

2. Go to SHUFFLE songs mode.

3. Write down the first 15 songs that come up--song title and artist--NO editing/cheating -- no matter how many Barry Manilow songs play.

4. Choose a group of people to be send this on to or simply share it with your readers. Leave your list in my comments or post it to you blog.

Here's my Sunday shuffle.....

1. Statesboro Blues - The Allman Brothers Band
2. Immigrant Song - Led Zeppelin
3. Domino - Van Morrison
4. Step on Inside - Vietnam
5. Beautiful Boy - John Lennon
6. Raised on Robbery - Joni Mitchell
7. Closing Time - Leonard Cohen
8. Rock 'n Roll Doctor - Little Feat
9. Would - Alice in Chains
10. Panama - Van Halen
11. One Way Out - The Allman Brothers Band
12. Jackson - Johnny Cash/June Carter
13. Delta Lady - Leon Russell
14. Mohamed's Radio - Warren Zevon
15. Suite Judy Blue Eyes - CSN&Y

Wow, in looking over my list, I've noticed that over half of these selections pre-date the 80's. Maybe Don McLean was right.....the music died.
