Dia De Los Muertos

Dia de los Muertos or Day of the Dead is a popular holiday celebrated the day after Halloween throughout Mexico and in other parts of the world. This day is for remembering the friends and family members who have passed on to the spirit world.

Here in the desert southwest, with a history rich in the Mexican heritage, it's not surprising there are lots of fun festivals, art exhibits and music events celebrating this special holiday over the next two days. I am looking forward to attending a couple of events myself.

I have found a wonderful short film which happens to be the 2013 Student Academy Award Gold Medal winner in CGI animation. Beautifully animated, it is a heartfelt story about a little girl who visits the land of the dead and learns the true meaning of this special day.  It truly captures the essence of  Dia de los Muertos perfectly. Enjoy!

Flula Borg: Renaissance Man

While I was away perfecting my skills of being an awesome hermit, I found I had a lot of time to search out the rare, the odd and the quirky. One day, not too long ago, I stumbled across a charming German man who made me laugh. I mean really laugh, belly jiggling laugh.  His name is Flula Borg.

Before coming to America, Flula had a huge cult following.  He was a dancer, singer, songwriter and techno DJ. He even had a mainstream hit, "Kuhchen", a response to the Mad Cow crisis in Europe. Genius!

Flula came to America and settled in Los Angeles. Where else? He makes regular appearances at the Viper Room, The Derby and among other venues in LA. Now, this is really big...Flula has participated in the Texas Redneck Games. He was the first non-American to enter the games. And, in true Flula style, he actually won a medal in the Mattress Chunk. What a Renaissance man!

I found Flula on YouTube. His channel's videos are reflections on his life in America, his confusions with the English language and his curiosity with idioms such as "party pooper", "balls to the walls" and "kicking butts and taking names". For some reason he records his videos in his car at odd hours of the morning. I don't know why, maybe it's the acoustics. Anyway, I do hope you enjoy Flula's video and will visit his channel on YouTube.

Without further ado.....I give you Flula!

"Jennifer is a Party Pooper" Nearly 4 million views!
You can find more of Flula here at his YouTube Channel.

That Was The Year That Was

Another year, another decade.

Yesterday and today, the internet is full of lists. Lists which remind of us, if nothing else, what we have missed in the past 365 days. I have reviewed a couple of these lists and have determined I've been living under a rock.

Take the Top Ten songs of 2009 for example, there is not one single artist on the list that I make it a point to listen to. In fact, there were only four artist that I have even heard of. Here's the list according to the AOL Radio Blog.

10. Jason Derulo: Whacha Say
9. Owl City: Fireflies
8. Flo Rida: Right Round
7. Kelly Clarkson: My Life Would Suck Without You
6. Kings of Leon: Use Somebody
5. Black-Eyed Peas: I Gotta Feeling
4. Lady GaGa: Poker Face
3. Iyaz: Replay
2. Jay Sean: Down
1. Taylor Swift: You Belong With Me

With the exception of Taylor Swift, Lady GaGa, Black Eyed Peas and Kelly Clarkson, I ask, who are these people? How can they have a song in the Top Ten? Not only have I never heard their Top Ten hit, I've never heard of them at all. Out of the four I have at least heard of, there are only two where I have actually heard their mega-hit.

The same applies to the Top Ten movies of 2009. I've seen three of the 10.

I guess I'm just not as hip as I once was.

I did happen, however, to post the top video of 2009 here last February. Must be a fluke. The clever stop motion video, Her Morning Elegance, features an animated woman in bed who appears to be flying, falling and swimming. The music is by Oren Lavie, it's a catchy tune.

I found this yesterday, a spoof of this top video. Hey, I know you are busy, you've got places to go and things to do but, this will take less than 2 minutes of your day - less than 2 minutes.

Just push "play".

Happy New Year!!!

Oh, Johnny.....

Last night I decided to watch an all-time favorite movie of mine. Although I have seen this movie a bajillion times, I made my nest on the sofa before the feature even started so I wouldn't miss a single line.

1. Soda.....check
2. Bowl of chocolate pudding.....check
3. Bag of Doritos.....check
4. Cottage cheese and salsa.....check
5. Remote.....check

Why, oh why, don't they make 'em like this anymore?

Airplane! is definitely a classic chocked full of memorable one liners and hilarious scenes. One of my personal favorites throughout the movie would have to be Johnny, he cracks me up. I'm not the only one that has stolen many a line from him over the years.

Here, take a look.....

See what I mean?

Take it from me, Airplane! is a great movie to see any time, any place with anyone no matter how many times you've seen it.

Oh, in case you were wondering, cottage cheese and salsa mixed together makes a delicious dip.

Crazy Women Drivers!

As women, we sure take a lot of guff for our lack of driving skills. Well, in the 38 years I've been a licensed driver, I've never received a ticket. I happen to take great pride in my ability to hold a vehicle on the road. I swear, you'll never find me yakking it up on my cell phone and applying mascara while driving, I'm much too busy paying attention and driving defensively. So, I feel that these claims about women drivers are totally unwarranted.

Then I ran across this YouTube video that shows two women fighting over a parking spot. Crazy women drivers!

Wacky Wednesday! - Ideas & Inventions

While watching television yesterday, I noticed a number of we-want your-inventions commercials. They promised to patent, design, develop and market your invention or ideas - send for your free inventor's kit today! Then I remembered watching Billy Mays' show, Pitchmen, where he is doing basically doing the same thing.  The one and only time I ever watched his program, he wrote a check to a guy for $150,000 that had invented the something-or-other.

Could it be that these tenuous economic times are bringing the inventors out of the woodwork?During the Great Depression there were a number of inventions introduced, for example: the car radio, runway lighting, the chocolate chip cookie, the staple remover, the tape dispenser, nylon, teflon and polarized sunglasses.  Take a look at the video below and you'll view a number of ideas and inventions that didn't quite make it. Some are really hilarious.

Have you ever pursued having one of your ideas marketed? I have a few ideas up my sleeve and, man, could I ever use a $150,000! Now, where did I put that 1-800 number?

Fritz, One Cool Cat

Some of you may remember the comix movement associated with the underground press and hippie counterculture of the 60's and 70's. I, for one, had the privilege of experiencing this phenomenon as it made its way into the head shops across America first hand. Now, those were the days.

One of the most prominent artist of this movement was founder Robert Crumb. Known for his distinctive style, R. Crumb was recognized for his critical, satirical and subversive view of American mainstream. He has said that his extensive use of LSD led to the development of his characters and their adventures which included Devil Girl, Mr. Natural and Fritz the Cat.

I was an enthusiastic fan of all these revolutionaries and their comx of this era; however, my favorite was the glib, smooth and self-assured Fritz the Cat. Man, I coveted each any every comix and freaked out when Fritz jumped off the pages and onto the screen in 1972. Rated X, my underaged  friends and I had to sneak into the local drive-in theater to watch our comix book hero who had become animated.

Two films were produced before R. Crumb finally put Fritz to rest, Fritz the Cat and The Nine Lives of Fritz the Cat, which the later can be found in its entirety on YouTube.  Take a little trip, take a little trip, take a little trip with me.

Gone Fishing

Ahhh, it's that time of year again. Time to head to Worms-R-Us, update your gear and head to the lake. My dad had me (and my younger sisters) on the lake fishing at a very young age. We learned rig our poles, bait our own hooks, land 'em, clean 'em and fry 'em up before we were ever given the opportunity to mow the lawn. These are the most memorable days of my childhood - fishing the lakes and rivers of south Arkansas with my dad. And, this is a tradition that we pass from generation-to-generation. My son, as a young boy, was also bit by the fishing bug.

There was a time when, if I wasn't fishing, I was watching fishing shows on television. Bill Dance was a popular sportsman host in our area, as seen in the video below. Some of these scenes are hilarious and remind me of all the good times I've had fishing. Do yourself a favor, get off your butt and go fishing. It gives you time to yourself in the great outdoors, whether you catch anything or not, you'll be glad you did.

Hey, the truck is pulling out - I gotta go!

Amazing... Stop... Motion... Animation...

I am always amazed by the level of talent and patience it takes to produce short films such as this one, A Wolf Loves Pork. I first saw this video over at Steven Video and was blown away. Shot using 1,300 photographs, this stop motion animated feature is definitely worth hanging around for. Enjoy!

Domino!

From Germany, World Domino Day 2008.

This was the 10th Anniversary for World Domino Day last May where a new world record was set for the number of dominoes used in a set - 4,345,027.

Preparations for this incredible show took a professional team of 15 designers and engineers 8 months. After that, 90 builders, managed by a professional team of 25, took 2 months to set up the dominoes.

Zlad!

This has to be the funniest and the worst music video I've ever seen.  Mullet wearing Zladko "Zlad!" Vladcik (fictional), from Molvania (equally fictional), is a bit over the top with his Slavic accent, grammatical errors and silver spacesuit.  In this particular selection, he is supported by a pink-haired, sunglasses wearing keytarist.  Obviously low budget, the lyrics and the video effects are just as puzzling as Zlad! himself.

Hey baby, wake up from your asleep
We have arrived onto the future
And the whole world is become
Elecktronik. Supersonik. Supersonik. Elecktronik

Spike Jones - Cocktails For Two

Spike Jones was a bandleader way ahead of his time. His satirical arrangements of popular songs included ridiculous vocals, gunshots, whistles and cowbells.  Yes, cowbells!  This particular video has all those elements plus an added bonus of cross-dressing.  Sit back and enjoy Spike's 1945 version of "Cocktails for Two".

World's Hottest Pepper Eater

The video below begs the question - why would anyone knowingly attempt to eat this pepper?

The Bhut Jalokia has been confirmed by Guinness Book of World Records to be the hottest pepper in the world. One seed from a Bhut Jolokia can produce sustained intense pain sensations in the mouth for up to 30 minutes before subsiding.  Oddly enough, it is used as a cure for stomach ailments.

Watch closely as Gavin documents his experience with eating this hotter than hot pepper.  The end result is truly shocking.
